Birds Nest – Accommodation in a sandstone house with stepped gables in Germany

4 people · 53 m² living space · Red sandstone · Stepped gable · Bay window tower · Surrounded by trees

A house made of red sandstone

The first thing that catches the eye about Birds Nest is the material. The multi-storey house is built from red sandstone, a stone that has been used for centuries in many regions of Germany for churches, town halls and town houses. Under a blue sky, the façade displays a warm, earthy red that appears lighter or darker depending on the time of day and the position of the sun. The natural texture of the stone lends the walls depth and makes the building appear solid and enduring.

Stepped gable and bay window tower

The roofline of the house is defined by stepped gables. Their edges rise upwards in steps, giving the building a striking, almost castle-like silhouette. Added to this is a bay tower that protrudes from the façade, lending the house an additional vertical accent. Such forms are familiar from historic buildings in Germany. They also make the house an eye-catcher for passers-by, who stop in front of it as they walk by and look up.

Balcony on the façade

A balcony is set into the façade, breaking up the austere stone structure. Viewed from the outside, it opens the house up to the surrounding trees and the sky. Gables, bay windows and a balcony are distributed across the storeys, revealing that the building extends over several storeys. Standing in front of the house, one sees an interplay of projections, steps and edges. Because of this relief, the façade appears slightly different in every light – different in the morning than in the evening sun.

53 m² for up to four guests

Birds Nest offers 53 m² of living space and is designed to accommodate up to four guests. The accommodation is therefore ideal for couples looking for a little more space, as well as for small families or two couples travelling together. The space is compact enough to find your way around quickly, yet still offers plenty of room for four people. Staying in a historic stone house gives the holiday a unique character that is quite different from that of a modern new-build.

Amongst tall trees

Tall trees stand all around the house, framing the building. In keeping with the name Birds Nest, this creates the impression of a nest nestled amongst the treetops. The green of the leaves provides a striking contrast to the red sandstone and the blue sky. On sunny days, the trees provide shade and cast shifting patterns onto the stone walls.

Location

Birds Nest is situated in Germany. The house stands on a path where passers-by walk past the building, and is surrounded by tall trees. Houses built of red sandstone with stepped gables form part of the historic built environment of many German towns and villages. They tell the story of the architectural history of their surroundings and continue to shape the character of entire streets to this day.
